Does being a Theist make you more moral because morals come directly from God?

The Reverend Friday was jailed for 7 years at Inner London Crown Court because he stabbed and poured boiling water over a homeless man in the street. He said homelessness was a sin, and warned the man that he was going to die whilst attacking him? Does religion make you more moral because morals supposedly come from God?
